Jonathan Mekonnen has decided to commit to Colorado State University. The 6’8 wing committed to Colorado State over programs like Loyola Chicago, St. Thomas, Wyoming, and Northern Iowa. Colorado State was the first division one school to offer Mekonnen and I believe it was the only school he took an official visit too as well. The Rams coaching staff must have had made a really great connection with Mekonnen because he said that they were the first school to actually believe in him.
Over the years Colorado State has done a great job at finding hidden gems from the state of Minnesota. They currently have 2 Minnesota natives on their roster: Josiah Strong (Champlin Park) and Joe Palmer (Faribault). They have also had 7 footer Jacob Jennissen (Sauk Centre) and Memphis Grizzlies forward David Roddy (Breck). Mekonnen will be also joining Kyle Jorgensen (Minneapolis Washburn), who is also another Minnesota native in the 2024 recruiting class. It is safe to say that the Colorado State Rams always Minnesota on their recruiting radar.
As a Prospect
Jonathan Mekonnen is one of the most explosive athletes in the state of Minnesota. The 6’8 forward was the leading scorer and rebounder for Eastview this past season and he led them all the way to class 4A state semi-finals. He also played on D1 Minnesota this spring/summer and he performed very well for them, which helped him gain multiple division one offers.
Mekkonnen is a very versatile and athletic wing who finishes very efficiently around the rim. Time and time again Mekonnen will fly to the rim for some vicious dunks. The 6’8 combo forward is also a very underrated shooter, he will knock down the three ball if he is left open. Mekonnen is also a master at the spin move, especially his signature half spin move. His half spin move is unstoppable when Mekonnen starts to heat up. His advanced skillset for his size allows him to be a matchup nightmare on the offensive side of the court.
Jonathan Mekonnen should be in store for a huge breakout senior season. He will definitely be a favorite for Mr. Basketball in the state of Minnesota. The 6’8 wing will continue to grow his skillset as times goes along and I predict he will be a top 150 player in the country by the end of the season. The Colorado State program should be excited for this hidden gem they just got. Mekonnen will be the next underrated player out of Minnesota to excel for the Rams program just like David Roddy once was.
